Community Involvement
We return to the community some of the valuable support it has provided over
the years by providing resources, support and encouragement to both charitable
and entrepreneurial endeavours. Our lawyers and staff donate a significant amount
of their free time to charitable and community organizations.
Doak Shirreff, Proud Supporter of the YMCA/YWCA Women of Distinction Awards
For the past 5 years Doak Shirreff Lawyers have proudly sponsored the Lifetime Achievement category in the annual YMCA/YWCA Women of Distinction Awards.
With more than 28 years of history, Women of Distinction events have grown in stature as the leading awards for women in Canada.
In Kelowna, 2005 marks the fifth year that the YMCA-YWCA of the Central Okanagan has presented this very special awards to highlight and celebrate the talent, achievement and innovation of women in their workplace and in their community through five award categories: Young Woman of Distinction; Career Leadership; Community Leadership and Volunteerism; Health, Wellness and Active Living; and Lifetime Achievement.
Proceeds generated from this event help women and their families - especially children and youth – to overcome financial barriers and make “Y” programs and services accessible to the entire community.
To date, the YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Awards has publicly honoured 86 exception females in Kelowna and the Okanagan, and raised over $87,000.

The CD, entitled Frankly Fine, is a collection of 12 Sinatra-style songs from
music's golden age. The project was sponsored by Doak Shirreff Barristers and
Solicitors with the CDs being sold through A&B Sound. Net proceeds from
the project will be donated to the Rotary Centre for the Arts.
Songs on the CD include: New York, New York, The Lady is a Tramp, I've Got
You Under My Skin, Nice N Easy, That's Life, Fly Me to the Moon, Mack The Knife,
For Once in My Life, Too Marvelous For Words, Without a Song, Saturday Night
and Robert's signature tune - The Coffee Song.
Robert is a talented, award-winning singer who has been performing in a wide
variety of venues for the past 8 years. For many years Robert has had a great
love for the music of Frank Sinatra and wanted to record a CD at some point
in time. Doak Shirreff made the whole dream a reality.
"Doak Shirreff offered to cover the costs of the project and give 500
of the CDs to their clients as Christmas gifts. The other 500 CDs will be sold
through A&B Sound starting November 21st. The money raised from the sale
of these CDs will be donated to the Rotary Centre for the Arts. I will not receive
any remuneration from this project. I am just delighted that I can record my
music and raise some money for the Arts in the Central Okanagan.", states
Robert. "I never thought that my 'hobby' would lead to something like this
- I am delighted."
The CD is the start of bigger things for Fine's singing career. His website
www.robertfine.com will be launched November 21st as well. Fans can sample the
songs from Frankly Fine, buy the CD and make bookings online.
When asked if he aspires to make singing his career Robert stated, "I am
very happy being with the EDC and promoting this region. Singing is my hobby
and if I can sing and raise money for the Arts then I am quite happy to do so."

Corporate Client Appreciation Party Raises Funds for Canadian Cancer
Dark Suits, laughter, the crash of pool balls hitting, and Casablanca playing
softly in the back room.... Not what you would expect when thinking of a Law
Firm!
The corporate clients of Doak Shirreff were invited to travel back in time to
an era long past. The partners of Doak Shirreff, in the guise of "The Untouchables"
and dressed to the part, delivered a memorable evening to their guests.
The Laurel building was transformed into the Untouchables era complete with
antique cars, pool tables, Zoot suits, spats and Tommy Guns. Robert Fine entertained
the crowd with his award winning Sinatra song impersonations, while the Grey
Monk winery and food from the Bohemian Bagel Café completed the atmosphere.
Our clients were invited to test their pool skills against our Chairman of the
Board, Grant Shirreff. Every challenger made a minimum donation of $20.00 to
play against the Chairman, and those funds, together with a donation from Doak
Shirreff, were given to the Canadian Cancer Society. There to accept on behalf
of the Canadian Cancer Society was its local President, Martin Mills, who proved
his own prowess at billiards.
Many of the guests had a personal story to tell about Cancer, and their donations
mirrored those stories.
We thank our clients for their generosity and for their support. Thanks to them
for making it a most enjoyable evening, while helping our community.
