Sommerey, Roy
Roy was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He arrived in Kelowna as a youngster with his family. He graduated from Kelowna Secondary School in 1978. He returned to Edmonton to study at the University of Alberta. He successfully completed an accelerated program and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta in 1983.
Roy returned to Kelowna to begin working at Doak Shirreff He completed his articles in 1984 and became a partner of our firm in 1989. Like many of his partners, Roy has worked his entire professional life at Doak Shirreff. He considers himself blessed to have been able to establish a successful legal practice in Kelowna and to have the opportunity to work with such a great group of people that make up the firm.
During the 26 years he has worked at Doak Shirreff, he has gained experience in many practice areas. This varied legal background provides Roy with unique insights into many different aspects of the legal situations he is helping his clients with, the knowledge to avoid pitfalls, and with the capability to find the best solutions for his clients’ legal situations. During the past few years Roy’s practice is now focused on Real Estate Law (Purchasing, Mortgages, Commercial Leasing Transactions, Subdivision, Land Development, etc.), Business Law (Purchases and Sales of Businesses, financing, family business succession), Corporate Law (Incorporations, Reorganizations, Shareholder Agreements, Corporate Tax Planning Transactions, etc.), Incapacity Planning (Powers of Attorney, Representation Agreements, Trusts), Wills and (Tax Efficient ) Estate Planning (Wills, Family Trusts, Alter-ego and Joint Spousal Trusts, Life Insurance Trusts), Estates, and Tax.
Roy is community minded. Roy provides pro bono legal assistance for Habitat for Humanity (which provide homes to families who would otherwise be unable to afford them), Interior Alzheimer Society and the BC Schizophrenia Society (helping people deal with the difficult issues that arise from mental illness and incapacity). Roy is an active member of the Rotary Club of Kelowna working together with others to develop and support Rotary projects which help many others locally and abroad. When Roy isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his family, being out on the lake with his boat during the warmer months and skiing on the local slopes or attending a Kelowna Rockets hockey game during the Winter.
